The State of Health Care in 2008

About the Report

Dear Readers,

It is a historic election year. The polls currently favor the Democrats; in politics, though as in life, the weather is always inclement. Both parties know what is at stake. Both parties are aware that voters at all points of the spectrum cite health care as a leading issue for governmental reform.

At the same time, state legislatures across the country are pushing forward some of the most sweeping health initiatives yet to reach the floors of their capitols. Millions of children across the country remain uninsured. Medicare is eating up state budgets, and the federal poverty level remains out of line with rising inflation.

In 2007, Michael Moore’s controversial documentary, Sicko, became a hot-button issue in the news. Since then, we’ve seen a minor contraction in the growth of health insurance premiums; drug companies, too, are under increased scrutiny. If 2007 was the year that the true nature of these issues reached the general public, 2008 will be the year that the public responds with calls for change.

Where do we go from here? How will politics affect our own individual coverage? And how can lower- to middle-class consumers deal with the rising costs of health coverage, along with a concurrent loss of coverage through employers? Health Insurance 2008 has scoured the statistics from both nonprofit and governmental organizations in order to find the answers.

After a thorough review, Health Insurance 2008 objectively organized the information by subject. Although the information for the first portion of the report is presented without bias, we’ve also offered our own conclusions and policy suggestions at the end of the document.
We hope you enjoy the report, and please write editor@health-insurance-2008.org for the latest updated information.

Cordially,
The Staff of the
Insurance Research Organization
