Health Policy and Quality in Mississippi
Depending on the state, there is varied legislation and programs being instituted to promote adequate health care for residents. Mississipi is one such state; citizens in Mississippi are now being provided with new programs and laws to help improve the quality of the state’s health care.
Perhaps part of the reason why new health care policies and programs are being instituted in Mississippi relates to the overall health care quality performance which was recently labeled as weak when compared to other states in the U.S.
Current Mississippi Health Trends
The health care policies which are being issued in Mississippi frequently deal with making health care available to lower income individuals although access to health care for all is the general desired goal. The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is one of the programs which Mississippi residents are pushing. Although SCHIP is a federal program, it is directed at lower-income residents in many states, including Mississippi.
Recently the Senate extended the program until March 2009 and provided funding to help keep it viable and to continue covering those who are already enrolled in the program. This beneficial program provides health coverage to children in low-income families who are unable to qualify for coverage under Medicaid.
The legislators in Mississippi are also on the move to combat childhood obesity which is an increasing problem throughout the state. One way in which they are helping to do so is to take steps in furtherance of the Mississippi Healthy Students Act which works to provide children with the means to get healthy and fight obesity.
Having legislation in place such as this one will help to make for a healthier state overall and legislators acknowledge this fact by helping children live healthy lifestyles.
