2008 Health Care Policy in New Mexico
New Mexico residents see a variety of health-related issues on a daily basis. Both the large number of uninsured residents and the decision-making process regarding the selection of a good health care program for state residents are two health issues which are discussed quite a bit by those who reside in the state of New Mexico.
New Mexico's Rankings for Health Care
As of 2007, New Mexico ranked second in the largest number of uninsured individuals when compared with the rest of the nation. Approximately 400,000 individuals in the state are without health insurance which is of a great magnitude. With that number weighing heavily on the shoulders of the New Mexico legislature, research groups had been enlisted to try and solve the uninsured problem as it relates to health insurance.
The research resulted in narrowing down the solution to instituting a publicly run insurance pool. Although further research and tallying of numbers would be necessary before a plan like this could be put in place, the research group determined that this seems to be the best plan. More information and research would be forthcoming in this regard.
Governor Bill Richardson's Legislation
Gov. Richardson is also the talk of the town when it comes to health care policy in New Mexico. The Governor is opposed to a single payer system but instead will introduce a bill to the Legislature detailing a health plan known as the Health Solutions New Mexico plan. The gist of this plan entails pushing for insurance reform, making the overall health insurance system simpler for all to understand and making such insurance affordable for the residents of New Mexico. A single point of accountability will be established by creating a new Health Coverage Authority. This bill is supposed to be introduced to the New Mexico Legislature sometime in 2008.
