Oregon Health Issues

Health care issues such as reducing the uninsured rate of children and adults in Oregon and providing affordable coverage for all are issues persisting in this state. There are a few strategies being discussed amongst Oregon residents to help combat this problem and make easier access to health care for those who need help.

Current Trends

One issue pertaining to health care in the state which is often discussed and debated is that of reducing the number of uninsured persons. Certain health insurance and payment programs including Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP all provide coverage for lower income individuals and act as a way to further health care access. In addition, the state funded Oregon Health Plan is being looked into for ways to increase availability for individuals such as the uninsured and small business operations.

Mental Health Care in Oregon

Another issue regarding health care in Oregon pertains to improving mental health care for those who need it. Acts such as the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act help to offer suicide prevention courses to state colleges and universities and provide program availability to those who need mental health care. As mental health issues are often overlooked in the grand scheme of health care, the legislature in this state is one which is hoping to bring these health care issues to the forefront and reduce costs associated by such illnesses by offering awareness and prevention programs.

Insuring the workers in community health centers is another recently discussed issue with regard to Oregon health care. Recent legislation was introduced by Senator Smith of Oregon to help community health centers offer insurance options to their employees. As these employees are essential to providing for the health needs of Oregon residents, making sure that their insurance needs are covered in order to keep them as employees is an important action.
